Phelps, Robert Dean, M.D. 76, died unexpectedly on February 7, 2006 from a heart attack suffered while indoor rock climbing. Preceded in death by wife, Dorothy (Madrin) Phelps. Survived by caring wife and loving partner, Kitty Matthews; brother, Richard (Carol) Phelps; children Cat (Scott) Midgley, Marge (John) Pierce, Steve Phelps, Susan (Tracy) Donahue, and Tom (Berta) Phelps; stepchildren, Erik Sexe and Karin (Troy) Hill, and 10 grandchildren, all of whom were with him at the end. Bob was a longtime Anesthesiologist at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. He was a professional soccer referee, and avid tennis player and marathon runner. In his post retirement years, Bob enjoyed biking, bird watching, skiing and rock climbing. He was a ski instructor at Highland Hills and climbing instructor at REI. Bob's favorite pastime was talking to friends - old friends, new friends, and soon-to-be friends, about anything from religion to politics. His energy, strength, and love will be sorely missed. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at Mendakota Country Club in Mendota Heights on Thursday, February 9, 2006 from 4-7 PM. Memorials may be sent to St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 2211 Clinton Avenue, Mpls, MN 55404.

Dear, Cathy, Margie, Susie, Tom and Steve and Kitty,
I was with my Dad when he got the news of your father's death, it was quite a shock. I am so sorry and I only wished we all lived closer so we could all be together when these things happen. Your father was a great uncle to us even though we didn't see each other that much. I probably saw him the most when he came to Syracuse a couple times and to our Fathers' 70th surprise party. He always was full of interesting stories and...

I am so sorry to hear about my uncle Bob.I have not seen alot of him in the past few years, however my dad always kept me up to date on him and his family. A picture of my dad and Bob sits on my 17 year olds night stand. It is a picture of them getting their Eagle award. My son also became an Eagle scout last year. We are very proud of that picture and I am glad to have that picture of the two of them .How handsome they both were. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.Jacci Phelps Holmberg

Dear Kitty,Cathy,Marge,Steven,Susan and Tom,
You and my brother Bob are in my family's thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time in all of our lives. Bob was a wonderful husband, father , grandfather, and an uncle to my five daughters and their nine sons. My life has been truly blessed by being Bob's younger brother for more than seventy-five years. Growing up together in Lincoln, Nebraska is filled with wonderful memories of times spent with Bob that I will treasure for ever....

Kitty and family, I just learned of Bob's passing today and would like to express my sympathy for your loss. I had the great fortune of working with Bob at REI. I was managing the climbing department when he approached me about wanting to volunteer to help people climb. I was immediately taken by his friendly sincere personality. Unfortunatley we couldn't let him volunteer but, he was immediately offered a part-time payed position! That was seven or eight years ago and I always enjoyed...

To everyone in the Phelps family, I am very sorry for your loss. I've known Doc since high school (which was far too many years ago). I will always have fond memories of Doc and his wonderfully crazy family.

I want to thank all of you who have sent in your thoughts and prayers about Bob. It has been so comforting. I never knew there was such a thing as an online guest book. I have every word printed out so I can easily read them again and again. Thanks so much! He was my "Shining Knight". Kitty

To Marge and her family,
I was saddened to here the news about your dad. I am sorry to have missed the celebration of his life last evening, but I did not get the info until it was too late to attend. My dad died in July of 2004 and I still miss him every day. However, I know he is with me because I hear his voice giving me advice, just as he did in life. I know your dad will be with you too. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this time of sadness.
