Heritage Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Sioux Falls Obituary

Robert Whinyates Post, Jr., 87, passed away peacefully at dawn on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

Born the only child of Robert W. and Cynthia Schwinn Post, Bob grew up knowing the importance of family and lifelong friendships. He graduated from Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Connecticut in 1957, attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, and later graduated from Parsons College in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Bob met his wife, Sara, while both were members of the Studio Players of Essex County during the summer stock season of 1963. They married in 1966 in Upper Montclair, New Jersey, beginning a partnership that would span nearly six decades.

His lifelong career in insurance took him across the country. Bob began in Glen Falls, NY, moved with his family through New Jersey and Kansas City, then to Omaha, Nebraska with Continental, South Sioux City with Joe Morten, and finally settled in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he served as President of Dornberger Berry. His final professional achievement was negotiating the sale of the company to The Hartford before his retirement.

Beyond his professional life, Bob had a passion for collecting. In 1972, he joined the Brewery Collectibles Club of America (BCCA), later serving as its national president in 2006, as well as president of the Dakota Chapter from 2001 to 2005. His extensive collection of beer advertising items filled storage units, homes, and even museum displays—always fueled by what he called “the thrill of the hunt.”

Bob was also deeply committed to youth sports. With two sons active in hockey, he spent 28 years coaching young players in Sioux City and Sioux Falls. A teaching coach at heart, he started the Junior Varsity program for South Dakota, even though that first team lost every game against varsity opponents. In 1999, he co-founded Hockey Headquarters with his son Bert, which successfully served the hockey community for 25 years.

Of all his accomplishments, Bob was most proud of his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sara; his sons, Mark (Michelle) and Bert (Jenny); and the grands, Kylie (Michael), Topher, Bea, and Eloise. He delighted in their humor, talents, scholarship, and achievements, cherishing every moment with them.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the cheerful and caring staff of Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater, SD, for their compassionate support.

It can truly be said: “Bob was one of the good guys.”

On Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 5:30pm at Heritage Funeral Home the Post family will host a memorial prayer and celebration of life.

Not sure what to say?

Bob was such a great person. It was an honor and pleasure to get to know him. He will be greatly missed.

Bob was such a big personality and a trusted friend and co-worker. He will be missed.

Bob was my first hockey coach, always smiling and a true gentleman.

A true gentleman who always gave me good guidance. I collected beer cans back in the 70’s and would buy a few items from him at the civic center in Sioux City.

Fast forward to a chance meeting 40
years later at a BCCA CANvention: where he remembered me as a 9th grader from Ponca, Nebraska. He supported me and inspired me to become a helper, the board member, and eventually President of the BCCA.

He was a beloved member of our hobby and a regular attendee and...

In the months that I knew Bob, he very quickly became one of my favorite humans. From his love of his family, his witty comments, his dance moves, and his ability to make me run from one end of the building to the other (and I am NOT a runner), this man was just the best. Work is not the same without him there!

Bob was a really good friend from the old auction and collectibles days. RIP Bob.

Always smiling and awesome coworker

RIP Mr. Post your such a kind person, thank you for your support and help with finding my place involved in youth hockey

Our sympathy to the Post family. Bob was a friend and always sharing his knowledge of breweriana. He will be missed by many.
