A Great Man

I graduated with Robert in 1965 from Pelion High School. I also joined the Navy right out of high school. Spent my 18th birthday in boot camp. In 1970 I was stationed in Groton Conn. going to sub school. I ran into Robert in the ox. He invited me to his house and I mer his wife. After that we never saw each other again. I retired in 1987 with 22 years in the navy. I served aboard the USS Forrestal during the fire in 1967. Senator John McClain was also on board. So sorry to hear about Robert....

Joyce, Ann and I are devastated by the news of Robert's passing. Robert was an amazing man. A great shipmate and a tremendous leader with a warm, engaging personality. We are privileged to have known you and Robert on Sunfish. Robert and I crossed paths frequently throughout our careers and I cherish those memories. You and your family are in our prayers. He will be missed terribly.

To Joyce and family, I had the honor and privilege to serve with Robert on USS Sunfish (SSN 649) in Pascagoula MS in 1979 and later. He was a great leader and shipmate and provided a sound, steady hand on watch. He was instrumental in living the example that made it "Great to be a submariner..." and was instrumental in my Navy career. Praying for the Lord Jesus Christ who made the seas and set their boundaries so that He will hold you close and provide you comfort. Fair winds and...

My deepest condolences to Joyce and all the family. I had the privilege of having Captain Rish as my CO during my Naval career. Rest Your Oars Captain: We Have the Watch

Joyce and family, I crossed paths with Robert several times during my Navy career, most recently in 1997 when I relieved him of his duties at the Pentagon (OP-22). He is an exemplar of what made submarine life so exciting...the crazy bubble-heads that loved cruising through the ocean depths. I am honored to have been a friend of this gentleman who sang to his dear wife every morning

Robert was one of my best friends in high school. We went separate ways after school, he to usc and the navy, me to north Greenville, Furman and the ministry in SC and NC. We shared many good times in school, the FFA and high school basketball. I wish I could have gotten with him before this occurred but it wasn´t in the will of the Lord. To all the family please be assured of our prayers as you journey on through life. I look forward to spending time in eternity with my friend. Please if I...
