Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory - Ballwin Obituary

Robert (Bob) George Schultz, Sr. was born on January 11, 1933, in Rahway, NJ.  He was the only child of George & Viola Schultz.  He grew up in the New England area.

He graduated first in his high school class in 1950 and then went on to study chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating in 1954.  He continued his doctoral studies in organic chemistry at the University of Illinois, graduating with a PhD in 1958.  He was a member of the Alpha Chi Sigma chemistry fraternity during his studies.

Bob met the love of his life, Sue, while at the University of Illinois and they married on August 16, 1958.  They first moved to Dayton, Ohio.  The rest of their life together was spent in St. Louis, MO.  They were married for 65 years! They were members of the worldwide Marriage Encounter community for over 25 years.  While she supported his career, he encouraged and supported her pursuit and interests in gardening, teaching, and lay service to the Catholic community.

They had three sons.  Robert (Susan), Karl (Lori) and Jim (Lucia).  Sadly, Robert Jr. preceded him in death after a long battle with cancer.

He was blessed with seven grandchildren:  Gabe (Terri), Molly, Emily, Grace (Frankie), Nathan (special friend Hailey), Julia and Victor.  Sadly, Molly and Emily preceded him in death and are now angels watching over all of us.

Bob was also blessed with two great grandchildren, Logan and Noah, who will learn about their great grandfather the chemist and historian.

He cared deeply about each family member and was so proud of their individual talents and achievements.

Bob was a research scientist for the Monsanto Company for 35 years.  He earned many patents, both United States and internationally as well as authoring many scientific papers.  His specialty and focus was petrochemicals.

He began his second career after retiring from Monsanto.  He earned his master’s degree in history from Truman State University. He then taught at East Central College for sixteen years.  He was the author of several books on the Civil War West of the Mississippi river.

Most recently his writing work focused on the Ascension Catholic Church of Chesterfield 100-year history.

Bob loved music and had a beautiful baritone voice, serving as an active member of several church choirs his entire life.

He also won the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the St. Charles County Historical Society.  He was very involved in a number of philatelic societies.

He shared many traveling adventures with his wife, Sue, during his younger years.  He cherished their time together.

As he aged, his brain remained sharp as a tack.  He never tired of studying and writing.  Unfortunately, his physical health declined.  His physician commented that he had the brain of a fifty-year-old but the body of a 150-year-old.

The last few months of his life his physical health declined and prevented him from living at home.  He was called to his heavenly home with family by his side on Saturday October 21, 2023.  While we are terribly sad, we are happy he is with Jesus and so many of our family members for eternity.  We miss him but someday we will be together forever.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Ascension Catholic Church of Chesterfield Knights of Columbus.

Services:  Services:  Memorial Mass at Ascension Catholic Church, Chesterfield, Saturday, November 11, 2023, 10:30 a.m.  Interment St. Mary Immaculate Conception Cemetery, St. Mary, MO.  Visitation at the SCHRADER Funeral Home and Crematory, 14960 Manchester Road at Holloway, Ballwin, Friday, November 10, 2023, 4-8 p.m.  Friends may sign the family's on-line guestbook at Schrader.com.

Not sure what to say?

Bob and I shared an office suite my first year at ECC in 1999, and he shared many teaching tips that I still value. He was a great listener! May he rest in peace.

Sue, I am shocked to hear this news but I am here for you in any & every way. Your prayer warrior, Rich KASTEL
