Not sure what to say?

Coach Smith and I got to know each other through sports at GCM. No matter where you saw Coach Smith he had a big hello and infectious grin! In the hallways, at the games, etc., he had something BIG to say. Haha. He knew how to brighten our days! I posted his passing on the George C. Marshall Alumni FB site and many people spoke of their love and affection for him. My sincerest condolences to his beautiful family. Janice Olsen

I had the good fortune to be a member of the George C Marshall basketball teams under Coach Smith in 1968 & 1969
He had a huge impact on me and instilled a love of basketball that inspired me to coach kids at all levels throughout my life as an avocation.
Coach would love knowing that several members of those teams have remained close friends in the 50 plus years since...and still regale each other with specific games and “ Coach Bobby Joe” stories
Rest In Peace Coach

Coach Smith asked me when he was my P.E. teacher in 1968-69 at GCM , why I hadn't tried out for his basketball team. I told him that I hated to run on the wooden floor. He smiled and said, "But you have a great jump shot". Not playing for him remains a big regret. Sad to learn of his passing. Great memories of a good man.

The Smith's have been long time family friends. Coach, as he was affectionately known for years after coaching, was an unbelievable man. He had an infectious personality. People were drawn to Bobby and he always had a tale to share. He had an uncanny ability to make people smile and laugh. He lived his life to the fullest. My heart aches for Jean, Steve and Scott. The world lost a truly great man. Rest In Peace Coach!

Jean, saddened to learn of Bobby Joe’s passing. We shared a lot of time at Marshall back in those “good old days”. He was a true character, energetic, charismatic, and he sure did know and love basketball. He did a lot of good as a great coach.

Fondly,

Terry Conroy
