Always Giving 150 Percent
When the Spear family had not heard from "Robbie," as they called 30-year-old Robert W. Spear Jr., a firefighter, by late afternoon on Sept. 11, they began to worry. He was always in constant contact with his wife and mother, sometimes having rushed cellphone conversations from the back of a speeding fire truck.
The family's thoughts had been centered on Timothy A. Haviland, Firefighter Spear's brother-in-law, whose office on the 96th floor in tower one of the trade center they saw burning on television.
"I didn't think my son was there," said Irene Spear DeSantis, Firefighter Spear's mother. "But of course he would have been there. This is a man who took a sizable pay cut to join the Fire Department. Anything he did, he did 150 percent."
Firefighter Spear took the entrance test for the Fire Department almost 10 years ago, but it was not hiring at the time, his mother said, so he climbed the ranks in other occupations instead. When the department finally did call, there was no hesitation. "And he loved it," his mother said of his job with Engine Company 26 in the South Bronx. "He loved the camaraderie."

Hi, I´m originally from Ireland but I lived in NY from 2001 to 2004. I worked in a motorcycle shop in Nyack where Robert was a customer and I used to work on his green Honda 1100. I remember him being a big friendly guy and we would always have a chat and laugh anytime he came to the shop. I remember being really shocked and saddened to hear he had died on 9/11. Also I remember prepping his bike for a memorial service shortly after his death. Anyway, fast forward 20 years and I now live in...

Irene was Robbie's mom, she is now gone this Christmas will be 3 years, that Irene is gone.. The loss of her Son, probably killed her. She lost her daughter Amy who lost her husband on 9-11 , and Timothy was on a higher floor for Marsh and McClennan, Then the other daughter developed cancer.. So Irene lost 3 kids. One Daughter is Still Alive, Barbara with two children, she moved out of Nassau County... I hurt for my friend Irene, I lost my son Spencer as well, he died in California he was 32...

Gone too soon. I'm sure Robert was resilient in the line of duty until the Twin Towers fell....

I saw your name on the back of your jacket on 102 minutes and felt compelled to search and find out if you made it out. My heart sank when I read your name amongst those who did not. There's not much else to say, but thank you for being brave and being a shining example of the best humanity has to offer. I see from reading about you, tragedy is no stranger to your family, so I will extend a prayer for you and all of those close to you. Much love and respect.

This year seems harder at year 18. Cant talk to your mom, I know she is with you, and Amy and Christine, and Timothy Haviland, but your mom has been with you....I texted with your sister Barbara Spear Keane hard for her.. I swear Robbie as long as I am alive I will watch the ceremony on TV say a prayer for you.. Sorry the past 18 years you have been in Heaven.... Give your Mom a kiss for me, I miss her so much... Your still my Hero.
