I met Bob in the spring of 1954. I was a lowly, undistinguished high jumper from the country Fairfax High School. Bob went the big city school of Washington and Lee High. He was one of a trio of high jumpers who dominated the state. He seemed a pretty big campus figure, but friendly to competiors.
