Not sure what to say?

Bob was big part of my life back in High School. We did everything together. Sports, surfing, camping out and hanging out. I always knew he would do Great in life. Memories will last forever.

He was the best. Miss him terribly and will forever have him in my thoughts. Love to Maureen and the boys.

Maureen, Matt, Thomas and Daniel - I miss Bob, I miss seeing you all, and I miss our times together...though I didn't see you very often, I do miss your sweet faces and being able to hug you! You all make my heart smile.

I grew up with Bob in Levittown, N.Y. We shared our HS years together with many more of our friends. In our early teen years we took to surfing. And as with everything else he did- he excelled. I'll never forget those years together.

I grew up with Bob in Levittown, N.Y. We hung out with each other, along with all our other friends, and played Lacrosse together from 7th thru 12th grade. He was also the starting quarterback all thru H.S. A very good one at that. After HS, we headed off in different directions. Visited him a few times up at Brown U. I ended up staying up here in N.Y. and Bob headed south. I'm not at all surprised that he did as well as he did and raised a wonderful family. I will always remember Bob...

Saddened to hear of Dr. Thunell's passing. Grateful to have known him. I was not his direct grad student but I still benefited from his amazing character and intelligence. He always had kind words of guidance for me and I envied his grad students, their luck of him as their advisor. I can see their impressive accomplishments as a reflection of 'Bob's' life teachings, and I know he'd be proud. Rest in Peace Sir.

A very gracious, intelligent, thoughtful mentor that an impact on so many. You are missed tremendously. God is with you and will comfort your family.

Without Bob having been my advisor, mentor, colleague and friend, I would have left science and teaching many years ago. His guidance and integrity kept me going and, as a result, I've been teaching Ocean science for 28 years. Many tears and an over abundance of warmth and love to you, Bob.

Dear Maureen, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Bob. I will always have fond memories of all of our travels in our younger years from camping at Tanglewood, exploring Paris, or the many trips to Kiawah. Cherish the memories of your long life together. Nancy Healy
