Robert Rice Updegraff, Jr.

Des Moines

Bob Updegraff was born on March 14, 1947 in Riverside, California to Dr. Robert and Virginia Updegraff. Bob died July 24, 2013 of cancer. The family lived in Iowa City for several years, (now including younger sister Margaret).

After moving to Des Moines Bob attended Greenwood, Callanan and Roosevelt High School and graduated from the University of Iowa. Bob wanted to thank his wonderful friends for their excellent company and help. You know who you are. Best to all of you.

Bob has donated his body to Des Moines University and no services are planned.

Far to the north, in the land of the Uetzes, lies a black rock, one hundred miles high and one hundred miles wide. Once every ten thousand years, a little bird flies to the rock and sharpens its beak. When all the rock has been worn away, one second of one day of eternity will have gone by.

May this be so. And now for one final time. Good Day.

Not sure what to say?

Dear Margaret,
I just learned, in searching for the our old Updegraff family friends, of the recent loss of Bob and also of Virginia's passing.
We all struggle to keep the connections between our friends and loved ones vibrant, even if they must only be in the realm of our all-encompassing spirit. Poor words fail.
Andrea and I are still here in the Black Hills of 'Dakota.
We would love to hear from you and yours if time allows.

Thinking of you and your family Margaret.

Dear Margaret: I am so sorry for our loss of Bbby So many Holiday memories at your house! Love Jan Zoeckler Please rest in peace Bobby!

What a tribute to Bob and his unique character that has brought together so many from Greenwood days on to remember him. From his house being saved from slipping down the hill to his Odin cheers. Thanks for the memories.

My dear cousin "Bobby", I have such fond memories of the two of us traveling by bus back and forth from Waterloo to Des Moines when we were children. We would walk to your friend's parties, swim at the Waconda Country Club, and go to some amusement park ( I believe it was called Riverside) on the other side of town. You were always so very nice to me. We haven't seen each other for several years but I will always treasure the wonderful memories of our childhood together. May you be at...

Doctor Disc one last request please. Rest in peace my brother in rock n' roll.

O. D. I. N. ODIN! Until now, I never really knew the exact source of Odin, The God of War: that led us to so many victories in those wonderful high school years. All my life I have been trying to explain to various friends and family members how a mythical Scandinavian War God could unite and energize a student body as it did for our class of 1965. Thank you Bob for your exuberance and imagination and your tremendous spirit.
