Although I have not seen Bob in many years, he left a lasting impression on me ever since we met at U.C. Berkeley. Like the other members of the Koshland lab, I smile when I remember Bob's fun and mischievous side. Lab outings, for which Bob was a tacit provocateur, are very fond memories for me. I am very sorry to hear about Bob passing away. He was brilliant and very funny. We shared a bench in the Koshland lab and, because my middle name is Robert, I became Greg Bob. Bob was a prankster. We traded giving each other minor heart attacks by wiring rubber nipples onto the compressed air nozzle, turning the valve on, and leaving he room. There was also the late night contests to see who could shoot 50 ml tubes furthest down the hallway by sealing dry ice in the tube and firing them out...

I worked with Bob in Dan Koshland, Jr.'s laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry at UC Berkeley. He was a postdoctoral fellow when I was a graduate student. He actually picked up a project that I had been working on somewhat reluctantly and did a much finer job with it than I ever could have done. Bob was very smart and very funny; is it appropriate for me to share with everyone that he was referred to as "The Prince of Mischief?"
