Roberta W. Tuttle

NEW LONDON  -  Roberta Wilson Tuttle, 67, award winning religious journalist, wife and mother, passed away on Nov. 13, close to the home waters she cherished and surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Pittsburg, Pa., to John Paul Wilson and Mary Moran, Roberta  was known by many as Beeta, a childhood nickname. She attended Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden and was a graduate of Fairfield University, where she was a pre-med major.

Instead of medicine, she chose journalism. Her career began at the New Haven Register, where she was a feature writer. Roberta moved to The Day in New London, she went from features to myriad hard news assignments. She was especially fond of the maritime beat, from the Coast Guard to the comings and goings at New London’s vibrant waterfront.

Roberta topped her journalistic career as executive editor of the Catholic Transcript in Bloomfield, serving the Archdiocese of Hartford. Under her leadership, the Transcript staff won a host of professional awards from the Catholic Press Association, New England  Newspaper and Press Association and Society of Professional Journalists.

Roberta is survived by William S. Tuttle III, her husband of 37 years, and their son William Paul Tuttle; her sisters, Sister Paul Mary of Jesus, of Kansas City, Mo., and Catherine A. Wilson, of Indianapolis, Ind.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled at noon Friday at St. Thomas Chapel at the Pastoral Center, 467 Bloomfield Ave., in Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor or Eastern Connecticut Hospice. Private burial will be St. Mary Cemetery, New London.  Please visit www.Byles.com for the full obituary, directions , or to sign the guestbook or to share a memory.

Not sure what to say?

Beeta,
Deepest condolences to my very dear friend! From summer school @ Yale-New Haven to Fairfield etc. etc. We always found a way to connect! Heartbroken by your departure.. Great to meet with you a year ago in CT. as I visited area schools for graduate school opportunities for my psychology majors...We had some great stories.
Beeta, I will never forget you and glad we connected a year ago.

Love,
Terry Leary

Beeta,
Deepest condolences to a very dear friend. Enjoyed our close friendship as we matured into adulthood from our summer school days @ Yale-North Haven (high school) to present! Great to see you a year ago in Hartford on my rendezvous to CT. to develop relationships with graduate school for my Psych. students. We'll never forget some interesting & fun times @ Fairfield as well!
Always and forever !!!

Love, The Professor... Terry Leary

My deepest condolences to the family. I was saddened to hear the news today. I worked with Beeta back during her days at the New Haven Register. We lost touch when I went into the Navy but reconnected several years ago via Twitter and had the chance to catch up via email. She was a kind and caring person who loved her family very much. She will be missed by all who knew her.

My relationship with Beeta goes back to our days at St. Ritas Elementry School. She was my best friend and I will never forget her! After grammar school, I unwisely opted to attend St. Marys HS but soon recognized my folly. While in the process of transferring to Sacred Heart Academy for my sophomore year, my Dad was transferred back to the Boston area. Beeta and I tried to keep in touch, but like so many geographically challenged friendships, compounded with increasing professional and...

Dear Mr. Tuttle and family,

I was Roberta's Primary Care Provided since 6/2014.
I enjoyed caring for her and being in her presence.
I found her quite lovely and very special.
She was a modest woman, warm and friendley. While we stay busy as medical providers we gain an affinity and fondness to certain patients. Roberta was one of the patients. While I took care of her medically with a goal to keep her up to date with routine healthcare maintenace, she had a way to...

Dear Bill,
We just got word of your tragic loss. Our condolences to you and your family. May she rest in peace and may you rest knowing you shared 37 years together. God Bless.

Dear family of Roberta, Please accept our deepest sympathy. We knew Roberta only through a couple virtual meetings. We welcomed her support and enthusiasm for digitizing the Catholic Transcript and its subsequent accessibility in the Catholic News Archive. We will miss working with her. Sincerely, Jennifer
