Roger Lowell Dean was born on July 28, 1963 in White Plains, New York to the late Herman Odell Dean and Evelyn Deloris (Bennett) Dean. From their union came two children, Roger being the eldest and his little sister, Penny Dean. During childhood the two were inseparable which was inspiring to see such a close bond between siblings. They began to be affectionately known in the town of Greenburgh where they grew up as Roger and Roger’s little sister. Roger’s love for animals stemmed from the variety of pets he had while growing up. He went to Woodlands High School and graduated in 1981 with honors and was a member of the National Honor Society. Subsequently, he attended Pace University. During his time in New York, he loved cars, bikes, and his friends. He was a staple of the community as a family member, a friend and resident of Westchester County.

In 1989, he moved to Virginia and started the next section of his life which included meeting and courting Barbara Ann Curtis. In 1992, the two wed and shared nearly twenty years of marriage raising five children together until their separation. In 2010, he became a single father raising two boys. It was a task from which he did not shirk away. It was not ideal, but it had to be done. As he would say, he “had to make it happen, Captain”. Above all, Roger was a man that loved his children. He loved them all equally. He loved all five of his children from the oldest to the youngest and raised them to the best of his ability with love, compassion, and integrity. In life, he loved his children without reservation. That love now lives on through those that knew and loved him and his love for his kids.

People who knew him would describe him as one of the kindest and most generous souls. He also was a brilliant man. If you had a question or needed advice, he was the best person to go to because he would help you analyze the situation and the full array of options. He would then give you his suggestion straight while also maintaining a level of tact that is uncommon from that kind of honesty. His suggestions always came from a place of love and wanting to see people succeed, especially his children. He also had one of the most heartfelt laughs which was accompanied by an equally authentic sense of humor. He appreciated a good joke and would stop a stranger to pass on the joke if he thought it would brighten their day.

Roger is predeceased by his paternal grandparents: Leslie Odell Dean and Queen Marie (Anderson) Dean; his maternal grandparents: Richard Bennett and Eura Lee (Gilliam) Bennett; his father: Herman Odell Dean; his eldest son: Datrionne Lamont Curtis. As a believer and follower of Christ, he will be able to fellowship with these loved ones in paradise.

Left to share his memory are his mother: Evelyn Deloris Dean; his sister: Penny Michelle Dean; his children: Daryl Leon Curtis, Brashia Aketra Curtis, Roger Teon Dean and Reese Lamar Dean; his grandchildren: Daryl Leon Curtis, Jr., Darius Lamont Curtis, and Jay’Mee Leann Davis; his fiancée Terry Denise Young and he is also survived by many friends who will join his family is keeping his memory and legacy alive.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Roger was a brother and good friend. The Dean family are loving, honest and hard working people. How do I know that? I am 63 years old and when I was 21 years old. I moved from Harlem to White Plains NY. The Dean family took me in their home until I finished school and got married. Roger was my best man at my wedding 40 years ago. Roger was very intelligent and had a sharp mind. I am looking forward to seeing him again. Derrick and Lilly Hill
