Not sure what to say?

Dear Joanne,
In 1966, I graduated from college on a Wednesday, moved to NYC that Friday, and Monday, I began my first job--picture caption copy editor for Crowell-Collier Macmillan. My boss? Roger Greenspun. Mentor, yes. "Dutch uncle," you betcha. Great, good friend. YES. YES.

Just now, digging in old files, I've come across a letter from Roger, typed, with hand-written emendations (once an editor, always an editor) March 7, 1970. Roger describes how it has come...

I'm truly saddened to learn of Roger's passing. His elegantly written work was for me a source of pleasure, inspiration and enlightenment. And as a Rutgers undergrad in the early 70's, I was thrilled to be able to enroll in his film course, which turned out to be one of my most interesting and intellectually stimulating academic experiences. My condolences to his wife and family. --Nathan Rosenstein (Rutgers College Class of 1973)

Our sincere condolences to Joanne and family. Roger was a lovely man and beloved patient. From everyone at Marc Hendler DDS

My deepest sympathy to you Joanne. Please know I am thinking of you. I still remember our days walking to Renfrew School so many years ago. Take care, Barbara Burns Favreau

Last year I had a wonderful cocktail with my cousin Roger. It was a special moment. I was so happy to meet him and only regret we did not connect years earlier. He was so charming. My sincere condolences to Joanne.

Dear Joanne, I was very fond of Roger.
Peter said it was so wonderful meeting him & spending some time with him last year..
Feel free to call us & come to visit us anytime. We would love your visit. Much love, Norman & Betty

Oh no. Roger was at Rutgers when I was there and programming a film series. He spoke at one of the Truffaut movies I showed in a series on film and childhood. I had paired the 400 Blows and Peppermint Soda. We became friends and had several dinners together, often with my friend Rosemary who he was very fond of, which he always treated for and drank one or two manhattans. He was kind to me and put me forward for a few jobs, one at MOMA and one at CBS.. I loved his writing for Film...

Roger was a professor of mine at Rutgers College in the 1980s. To say that he was a "friend and mentor to many of his students" does not begin to describe the affection and respect his students had for him. To say that most of my love and knowledge of film was fostered by Roger would be no exaggeration. I often think of Roger when watching movies -- particularly some that I know to be among his favorites: To Have and Have Not, Only Angels Have Wings, Grand Illusion, The Searchers, anything...

Dear Joanne,
We were so sorry to hear of Roger's passings. You are in our thoughts.
