Roger Hackett

Sorry to hear of Professor Hackett's passing. When I was a grad sudent at UM's Center for Japanese Studies in 1966 Professor Hackett was a favorite teacher. His classes were always interesting and informative. And he played a mean game of tennis. Condolences.

I was very sorry to hear the sad news. Roger was a wonderful man. I cherish the memories of our fiercely fought tennis games and his joyous rendering of the marine hymn after victorious matches.

I am so sad to hear about Professor Hackett's passing. I took Professor Hackett's Modern Japanese History course in the fall of 1988, will never forget this excellent class. His reminiscences about events like the 2/26/36 coup attempt, which happened when he was a child in Japan, enthralled me, and his clear cogent lectures, remain as a model for me. Professor Hackett was the most gentlemanly, warmest, and nicest person anywhere. It was my privilege and pleasure to be his junior colleague for thirty years. We owe much to Professor Hackett and others who, as the first generation of Japan scholars, successfully built the field in the United States. Cheers to Roger.

I was sad to hear that Roger is no longer with us. He was not only a colleague and mentor from 1967-74 when I taught at Michigan, but also regularly "schooled" me on the squash court. He will be missed.
