Roger Kirk

Roger was the first recipient of the Ohio State University Department of Psychology's distinguished alumnus award, and it is hard to imagine a more illustrious alumnus of our department. In honor of Roger, we named a distinguished research award after him. We are so proud of his career and the luster he brought to our department. We and the entire field will miss him greatly. The family of Walter Hurd, best friend from high school and beyond, expresses condolences of losing one of our father's good friends...many good memories even at Ohio State University:)

Jane, we send our deepest condolences to you in the loss of Roger. We were unable to attend the visitation yesterday, so could not express our thoughts to you personally. We will always cherish the memories of our times chatting together in ballroom dance class and watching the two of you performing so magically and beautifully. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

We sailed together; what a great guy!

Dr. Kirk made us (clinical psychology graduate students) smile every time he busted out his ballroom dance moves during a lecture. He taught me to relax and not sweat the small stuff...but also to be reasonably afraid of his statistics exams I'm an excellent scientist-practitioner because of him! Like so many others, I was his student and gained so much knowledge from him. Then, as his faculty colleague, I learned so much more from him about how to connect with students. His legacy is so much more than his many decades of teaching. He was funny, supportive, and influential. At a faculty retreat, I vividly recall having a conversation with him about his health after beating cancer. With typical Roger Kirk wit, amusement (he was smiling), and genuine sincerity, he told me...
