I don't recall how I first met Roger; he was the kind of person who you felt you always knew. His warm presence and enthusiasm were such a great gift at any event or occasion. We worked together over the years on several projects, notably the symposium "Preserving Historic Guastavino Tile Ceilings, Domes, and Vaults" in February 1999 at Columbia University. It was my good fortune to call Roger a friend. I have no doubt that there are many besides myself for whom his wit and intelligent conversation will find no replacement. That we were all denied the opportunity to speak with him one last time was especially painful.
