Not sure what to say?

I met Roger when we were students at SF State in 1967, sharing a house with others on the Great Highway. We became friends, went to musical events, had various adventures, and remained close for eight or nine years. For a couple of years after college, Roger and I had a two-man house-painting business in the Bay Area as we did our best to figure out our adult lives. I remember those times with great fondness for Roger. At some point we lost touch. Thirty years later I heard he was in San...

I met Roger through his siblings many years ago. As Lisa mentioned he was the cool older brother of the Ryan’s. Two of his sisters and I dropped by his house to visit him just a few weeks prior to his passing. We were able to chat while eating ice cream and berries. I could tell he was in pain but he surely did not mention it. Instead, he insisted on giving me a tour of his home…showing me the renovations that he and Gail had recently completed. I remember him speaking at Kaye’s (his mother)...

My son, Chad, took weekly trumpet lessons from Roger when Chad first started playing the trumpet in elementary school. Roger was a wonderful role model and a caring and helpful teacher. Roger had a great impact on Chad who still plays thet trumpet today as a senior in high school. We're sure that the many students whose lives he touched feel the same. Our hearts go out to the family for the loss of this talented and caring man.

Our deepest condolences.

I met Roger and his wife Gail in the Tiajuana Clinic and knew then that he was a man who lived and loved life to the fullest. We should all learn from Roger how to enjoy ourselves every day. My prayers are with you, Roger and your family. Fondly, Carrie

Roger's Sound from his Trumpet was Out of This World

Roger was a son to me starting in 1950 when I married his Mother Kay Dorner and taught me my responsibilites in being a Father and being included with love in a growing family & leanring how to skin dive, make Rockets that worked but also getting trumpet lesson from Navy Musician in at 14 years old. His Mothers musical talent on Piano helped Roger in many ways & I will miss his humor & smile.

It was great to have known Roger the last few years. We had some nice conversations about music, basses, etc...Roger shared with me his years up in Northern California and his fight with cancer. I regret that we didn't have more time to get to know each other better.

My brother Roger will be dearly missed by all that knew him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a beautiful smile. One of my favorite memories with my brother was when he played at the Hawaii Theater a few years ago with a famous Japanese trumpet player whose name escapes me but it was such an honor for Roger and he was so happy to have that moment on stage with him. My brother was so talented, smart, and just an all around fun guy. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. I feel...

Roger was a sweet & funny guy, not to mention downright Handsome! I mostly knew him as the cool older brother of my "sisters" - I didn't realize he was such a legend - what a great legacy!...One day, we can all see him performing again with his Mom at their "gig" in the sky...What a crowd and what fun that will be! Bye' Roger - for now....Love, Lisa

I first met Roger when he asked me to do a Dixieland job outside on Mission Bay with Frank La Marca. It was not until later that I found out he was a legend in our community, and contributed so much to our jazz scene. He was warm, cordial, very talented, and knowledgeable. Always laughed and smiled...he and his trumpet will be sorely missed at our Local 325 and in San Diego.
