Obituary

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers say former defensive lineman Roland Lakes has died. He was 72.

The team said Lakes died Monday.

A second-round draft pick by San Francisco in 1961 out of Wichita State, Lakes had until 2010 been the 49ers' youngest starting lineman in team history at 21 years, 11 months and 24 days when he played as a rookie in 1961.

Lakes played 10 of his 11 NFL seasons with the Niners, spending his final season of 1971 with the New York Giants before retiring. Lakes finished with 10 fumble recoveries in 154 career games and 124 starts.

He later worked as a consultant in San Pablo, Calif.

Lakes was born in Vicksburg, Miss., on Dec. 25, 1939. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Not sure what to say?

I only knew about Roland through his sister, Alice. If Roland was as nice as his sister he was one hell of a person. I was sorry to hear the sad news.

It was a pleasure to know Roland post-49er. He was a larger than life gentle giant. I'm sorry to know my friend is gone. R.I.P.

I will remember you always.

It's been seventeen months and I still feel a profound loss in my life, which
I acknowledge daily. We will remember you as a beautiful human being, not a man of many words. but an excellent educator. Our time was too short.

May Allah bless you my brother.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

To the Lakes family,my deepest sorrow,
May you draw close to God at this time knowing that he will comfort and sustain you at this difficult time.

T the Lakes family,my deepest condolence.
May the comfort which God gives through his word the bible sooth you as cope with the loss. Soon God will bring all wickedness, sorrow and death to end and man will live under peaceful conditions.2Pet 3:13.
