I was fortunate to have Dr. Freter as a professor when I was an undergrad at the University 1971-75. He expected a lot of his students and I probably learned more in his class than any other during my Microbiology study. I was fortunate to also know and work with his wife Gloria in the laboratory at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, and his son Bert who has also worked form many years at St. Joe's and with whom I share a mutual interest - wrestling. Dear Rolf, Lisa and Family, My first job as a microbiologist was in your father's lab in 1975-76 as a research assistant. We did some exciting work with V. cholera that later lead to an oral vaccine. Dear Freter Family,
I was very sad to hear about Rolf's passing. When i arrived at UM in 1996 he became my mentor. We taught courses together and published a number of papers together. we had a running joke about the misuse of idioms and one Christmas he got me a book of them so i would be sure not to misuse them anymore.
