I went to BU in 1978 to study with Rolf after being knocked out by his playing on the Empire Quintet albums. He always inspired me to try to be the best and shared with me many of his insights in music and mastering trumpet technique. I listened to Ralph nonstop during high school and college, when I played the trumpet. I admired his sound so much. He was an inspiration with that perfect tone. Rest in peace.

Blue and Me By Jodene Smedvig
My baby brother
Blue and me
Will always be
Entwined in history

The years pass
But we last
My baby brother

I first met Rolf in Theory class at Boston University and we became great friends especially when we both were at Tanglewood during the summer. We played in the same orchestras but it was the kind and gentle Rolf who was endearing and was a good friend. If we were just picking wild berries or mushrooms or someone needed that ride to the emergency room, Rolf was the guy to call. He will be remembered and missed. Condolences to his family.

I remember Rolf from my undergrad days at BU school of Fine Arts, what a great privilege to have such a brilliant/superb musician as a coach. He was always kind and encouraging. My condolences to his wife and children.
