Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home - Carthage Obituary

Carthage - Ronald D. Covell, 66, of 35800 Sayre Road, died Thursday afternoon, December 18, 2014, in the Emergency Room of the Carthage Area Hospital after being stricken at his residence.


Ronald was born in Canastota on October 20, 1948, the son of the late Charles and Mary Waters Covell. He was a 1968 graduate of Carthage Central High School. He married the former Susan R. Schroy on May 30, 1980 in Carthage. Ron was currently working as a recreation aide at Fort Drum and has for the past 28 years.

He was a member of the American Legion Post # 789 of Carthage.


Ron was an avid softball player and coach. He was on numerous winning area teams that participated locally and also played in Regional and National Softball Tournament events. For many years he coached the Girls softball league at Indian River in the summer.


He is survived by his wife, Susan R. of Carthage, one daughter and her husband: Jessie E. (Jeffrey) Peebles of Lowville, two sons: Corey D. Covell and Ronnie R. (Nichole) Covell all of Watertown, 3 grandchildren, Gregory Covell and Aston and Sadie Peebles; one brother: Richard (Gary) Covell and his wife Maxine of Carthage and several nieces and nephews. His brother, Charles Covell Jr. and a sister, Frances (Carol) Hedden are predeceased.


Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, December 23rd at 6:00 PM at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home with Deacon Richard Staab officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3-6pm.

Ron was a childhood friend when he lived in Great Bend and I lived at Fort Drum.

Many great memories including playing on a little league team together at Fort Drum. He pitched and I played first base.

I'm very sorry to hear of Ronnies passing he was truly one of the best softball players I had the privilege to play with and against, and call him my friend.
