I studied the European novel under Ron in the 1980's at Berkeley. I'll always remember his smile and his infectious laugh. When I protested a grade he had given me on a term paper, he read it again and gave me a higher grade. Classy guy.

When I transferred to UCB in the early I got forced, to my indignation, into an intro English class.
I turned in my first work, thinking I was pretty hot stuff, only to get ripped by Prof Loewinsohn. I still remember it, and the criticism and encouragement he continued to give me throughtout the quarter. I always think of him whenever I read Shakespeare, and especially King Lear. We had some fun with that.
