STERLING

Ronald S. Thompson, 84, died peacefully in his home, surrounded by the loving care of his family on Wednesday, July 14, 2021.

He is survived by four daughters: Linda Chisholm and Debra Valley, both of Sterling, Carol Kelley of Barre, and Andrea Borelli of Petersham; eight grandchildren: Jennie, Cassie, Sarah, Jessica, Al, Joe, Liz and Lynn; and five great-grandchildren: Tucker, Makenzie, George, Katie, and Sara. He was predeceased by his wife, Eunice C. (Johnson) Thompson, who died in 2015.  His daughter, Donna Ivaska, and his brother, Rodney Thompson, also predeceased him.

Ronnie was born in Holden and raised in Sterling, son of Stanley and Clara R. (Ball) Thompson.  A lifelong resident of Sterling, he attended local schools, and matriculated to Fitchburg State College, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in English and History; and then went on to further his studies at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, where he earned a second Bachelor’s Degree.

In 1951, as young teenager, he began his life-long love of farming, taking over the family farm stand from his father, and growing the business over the years, along with the help of his wife and family. A farmer through and through, Ronnie, until the time of his death, owned and operated Thompson Gardens, Sterling.  In addition, for several years, he taught Industrial Arts at Wachusett Regional High School.

The family would like to thank the Visiting Angels of Leominster, the VNA Hospice, and his favorite aide, Marcia, for the care, kindness, and compassion shown to Ronnie throughout his illness.

A funeral service honoring Ronnie’s life, and burial alongside his wife in Oakhill Cemetery, Sterling, will be held privately, under the care and direction of McNally & Watson Funeral Home, 304 Church St., Clinton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Worcester Animal Rescue League, 139 Holden St., Worcester, MA 01606.  To share a memory of Ronnie, or offer condolences to his family, please sign the Guest Book.

Not sure what to say?

My deepest sympathy on the passing of Mr. Thompson. When I moved to Sterling in 1986 the farm stand became a daily stop in the summer. Eunice and Ronnie were the hardest working couple but always had time for a friendly chat. Even though his body was aging his mind was so clear and he had such a quick wit. A great farmer and a wonderful human being.

My dear Linda, I'm so sorry to hear that your father passed away. I have so many fond memories of your Father. I remember the first time Keith and I met him and your Mom and he said " you are my daughter's friend so now you and your son are part of my family too." RIP Ron and Fly high with the Angels above us. Fondly, Sarah and Keith Knowlton

Our sincere sympathy to all the families. With Mr. Thompson's passing, a part of Sterling's history will also be lost. He will be greatly missed by everyone. We hope you will be comforted by pleasant memories With sincere sympathy, Ingrid and Robert Smith Sterling, Ma

Ron was a wise farmer and a good friend to my father and me. It was always a pleasure and an education to talk with him. He and his generation's counsel, and company, will be missed.

Rest In Peace Ron. You were a pillar of the community and will be missed by all who frequented your garden business. It was always a pleasure doing business with you.

Our deepest sympathy to the Thompson family Ron was always a pleasure to visit and talk with when stopping in for corn and vegetables rest in peace Ronald.

Please accept our deepest sympathies on the passing of Ron to your whole family. Ron was always such a good man and so funny esp. when he shared memories of he and Dad - Dick Mansfield growing up and getting in trouble with Auntie Clara on the farm. Never knew they were such Dickens. We have such wonderful memories of the farm, visiting and the store and all the years growing up. I will miss my birthday twin who for years teased me for trying to steal his birthday - Dec 28th will bring a...

Long time friends and neighbors, peace and blessings!
