Ross Lowell Smith, 92, of Rising Sun, Indiana returned to his Heavenly Father on January 22, 2016. Ross was born on April 8, 1923 to Howard and Ora (Ross) Smith. He was a graduate of New Washington High School. Ross worked at several jobs and last worked at Monsanto (where he was known as "Dynamite") retiring in 1985. He was a United States Army Veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Rising Sun First Baptist Church, the Rising Sun Masonic Lodge #6 and the Rising Sun American Legion Post #59. Ross enjoyed fishing, hunting and knives. He was also a beekeeper at one time and sold honey. Ross also took pride in the roses he grew. Ross is survived by his loving wife and friend Barbara of 11 years; two stepsons, Kevin (Rhonda) Hannah and Rodney (Kimberly) Hannah and by two step grandchildren, Derrick Hannah and Mariah Schneider, by special brother-in-law Virgil (Patricia) Peters and special sister-in-law Wanda Vinson. He is also survived by stepson Butch (Corina) Hunter, by step grandchildren, Dwight, Brian & Tim Nickell, Tammy Atwell, Jason Hunter, and Jeff Hunter and by many great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Among those that preceded him in death were his parents, brothers, Leon, Orville, Junior, Kenneth and Marvin, by sisters, Elizabeth Graves, Velva Smith and Evelyn May. Ross was also preceded in death by his first wife of 37 years, Francis Peters and by a step daughter, Shelah Nickell. Funeral services will be at 1 PM, Monday, January 25 at the Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN with Rev. Jim Jenkins officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, January 24 from 5-8 PM at Markland Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be at Rising Sun New Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Rising Sun 1st Baptist Church, Rising Sun Masonic Lodge or the Rising Sun American Legion. Cards are available at the funeral home. marklandfuneralhome.com
