Not sure what to say?

I cherish the memory of a long evening, with Rowland and Tim McNulty, at the Olympic Park Institute, before a windy-rainy day in the mountains, speaking of the Olympics which were a new home range for me, and familiar yet challenging to them. Food for curious minds from master chefs.

On behalf of North Cascades Conservation Council, I would like to honor Rowland for his popularizing of the geologic story and landmarks of the region in his guidebooks, "Routes and Rocks" series, and "Mountain Mosaic." He was the rare geologist who advocated against developing mineral resources in sensitive, scenic, roadless areas. His influence will be lasting...

Rowland was a mentor to me. His broad knowledge of Washington geology and his encouragement of a rookie geologist in the early '80s, coupled with his kindness toward us was a model that should guide others. His editing of our work in later years showed patience unusual for a superstar. Thank you, Rowland.

I am going to miss Rowland a great deal! As a geologist with WA State, and previously as a graduate student at Western Washington University, I had the pleasure of dealing with Rowland professionally (but more importantly personally) and found him to be a great man with incredible intelligence and heart. I had the pleasure of conversing as I tried to understand the complex geology confronting as I tried to complete my own mapping projects over the years. Rowland was always kind, thoughtful,...

I am so sorry about Rowland's death. He was a close colleague and friend of my father's. RIP Rowland. You had a great life and spectacular career. I will miss and I know Dad will too.

My sincere sympathy on the loss of your loved one. May God´s love heal your sorrow and may His peace replace your heartache with warm and loving memories. Matthew 5:4
