What can I say that hasen't already been said. One thing I can add that is, Van didn't talk alot but when he did everyone listened. Loved his humor.

Van was my peer and colleague for the last 15 years at CAMI. During that time I came to understand him as not only the keen mind, talented engineer, and insightful bureaucrat that he was, but also someone who was very ethical and forthright. He had a serious disdain for make-work or public-affairs extravaganzas that consumed the meager resources he was given to implement his valuable research program. Van was an expert on how the FAA worked, how to improve aircraft safety, and just the ways of the world. I knew of Van before I came to CAMI, but did not know what a fine person he was until I met him.

The world is poorer with his loss, but I am richer for having known him. My condoleces to his family and friends.

Barbara, I still remember you and Van and his volkswagon from our high school days. It is good to know that Van knew the Lord and that we'll have another reunion one day. We can catch up with each other then.

One of my fondest memories of Van is when my mom passed away in August of 1999. He came to her service and as everyone was wlking by giving condolences to the family, he stopped when he got to me. He hugged me tight and told me that everything would be okay. It was a side of Van that many people didn't get to see or encounter. I thank him for that moment and for the simple words that lay so much comfort on my heart. I pray that I can pass the same comfort on to Barbara, Burt, Sara, Lana, Erin...
