Obituary – Fairfield Roy M. Mitchell, age 102 of 3000 West Madison Ave. in Fairfield died Monday, December 19, 2016 at the Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield. Roy was born August 22, 1914 at Hedrick, Iowa, the son of Arthur G. and Elizabeth Minnick Mitchell. He grew up in Packwood and farmed in the Packwood – Fairfield area. He graduated from Packwood High School and studied agriculture under the G.I. Bill after serving as a tank mechanic in the U.S. Army during World War II. Roy married Ruth Ione Leinbaugh on December 1, 1945 at the Methodist Church in Iowa City. She preceded him in death on April 28, 2016. He was a member of the Packwood Methodist and Christian Churches, a 70 year member of the American Legion in Richland , a founding member of the Packwood Lions Club and volunteered at the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, his parents, 2 brothers Willis Mitchell and Carl Mitchell and a sister Dorothy Brown. Surviving are his daughter and her husband Julie Mitchell - Craig and Don Craig of Marion, Iowa, 3 sons: Steve and Kayrn Mitchell of St. Charles, Illinois, Michael Mitchell of Batavia and Rob and Lori Mitchell of Fairfield; 2 grandsons Aaron Mitchell of Iowa City and Matthew and wife Pamela Runestad- Mitchell of Omaha, Nebraska and 1 great granddaughter Aurora Runestad- Mitchell of Omaha, Nebraska. Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the Packwood Christian Church with Pastor Chris Conklin and Pastor Frosty Van Voorst officiating. Interment will be at the Packwood Cemetery with Military Honors with a luncheon at the church following the burial. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. at the church prior to the funeral service. Memorials may be directed to the Packwood Christian Church or to the Packwood Lions Club. Arrangements are in the care of the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
