Royal M. Edgerly, 74, of Tebbetts Road in Rochester died Friday, April 14, 2006 at his residence after a period of failing health. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Rochester, NH on December 24, 1931, he was the son of the late J. Hervey and Olga (Hendrickson) Edgerly. He attended local schools graduating from Spaulding High School in 1949. He was a lifelong resident of Rochester.

He volunteered to serve his country in the United States Marine Corp. in 1950 and saw action in the Korean War in 1951 and 1952.

Following service to his country, he attended the New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in Boston, MA. Upon graduation in 1955 he joined the family business, R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home as a 4th generation funeral director.

He was a funeral director in New Hampshire and Maine until his retirement. He served as President of the R. M. Edgerly & Son, Inc.

He was a life member of the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce of the United States.

For many years he was a member of the Rochester City Band. He entertained the summer crowds gathered around the Bandstand at the Rochester Commons.

He was a life member of the 1st Marine Division Association and the Marine League of Portsmouth, NH. He was also a 50 year member of the Humane Lodge #21 F&AM and a charter member of the Simadi Shine Club.

He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., Rochester Lodge of Elks, American Legion Post #7 and the National Rifle Association.

Rolly was also a former member Rochester Youth Hockey Association Board Member. How thrilling to be a part of the organization which led to the Spaulding High School winning the State Championship in 1990 which his son, Morgan, whom was a member of the team.

During retirement, Rolly enjoyed commercial tuna fishing with his son, Linc. He owned and operated the F/V Susie E. for many years out of Rye Harbor, NH, Gloucester, MA, and Kennebunkport, ME. He was the past president of the Bailey Island Tuna Club, Inc. and the Tri-Coastal Seafood Co-op, Inc of Newburyport, MA.

He was proud to earn his private pilots license and logged many hours flying to destinations throughout New England.

His love for the state of Maine is well-known. His vacation home on Great Moose Pond in St. Albans, ME served as a base from which he enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, camping, hunting and fishing. He was an integral part of the renowned “Mountain Boys”. He relished making family and friends feel special when they joined him there. He cooked, cleaned, and entertained them so they could truly relax.

Rolly will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him, including his wife of 34 years, J. Susan (Sintz) Edgerly; his sons, Royal M. Edgerly, Jr. of Barrington, Scott G. Edgerly and fiancée, Lynda Hastings of Lebanon, ME, Linc D. Edgerly and wife Lisa of Rochester, NH and Morgan J. Edgerly and his wife Kimberlyn of Strafford, a daughter-in-law, Ellen Edgerly of Rochester, grandchildren, Royal M. Edgerly, III, and wife, Jennifer of Rochester, Nicole Edgerly of Milton, Emily Edgerly of Rochester, Brandon Edgerly of Florida, Brittany Edgerly of Berwick, ME, Connor and Mikayla Edgerly of Strafford, NH; his great granddaughter, Ahlyvia Parker of Milton, cousins, Royal H. Edgerly and Larry Edgerly both of Rochester; mother-in-law, R. Virginia Sintz of Rochester; very special sister-in-law, Georgia S. Chapman and her husband, Carl of Dover; a sister-in-law, Jean Edgerly Saladino of Rochester, a brother-in-law, George Sintz and his wife, Christene of Hinesburg, VT and several nieces and nephews,

He was predeceased by his parents, J. Hervey and Olga (Hendrickson) Edgerly, infant son, Adam, his first wife, Carole (Emro) Edgerly, and a brother, James H. Edgerly.

A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, April 18 at 11A.M. in the chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main Street, Rochester, NH. Family and friends may visit with is family on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8P.M. Burial will be in the Rochester Cemetery on Franklin Street immediately following the service.
