Royce Chandler Obituary
Montgomery - Royce Wilton Chandler, Sr., 92 of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away February 10, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Merle Russ Chandler. He was a member of the 1948 Air Force Baseball and Basketball National Championship teams. He also played professional baseball for the Chattanooga Lookouts and The Washington Senators. He worked for Langston Finance, Alabama National and Amsouth Banks. He is survived by his children David (Helen) Chandler, Orange Beach, AL, Royce Wilton (Chip) Chandler, Jr., (deceased) (Linda), Lincoln, AL, Russ (Dawn) Chandler, Fitzpatrick, AL, Cass Chandler, Montgomery, AL, and Alison (Steve) Andrews, Montgomery, AL. Mr. Chandler is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, February 17th at Greenwood Cemetery at 11:00 am with Wiley Cutts officiating. A special thank you to Martha Patterson, Janet Watson, Jackie Tatum and Helen Sheffield. You'll never know how much we love and appreciate each of you. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Brantwood Children's Home, Agape of Central Alabama, Vaughn Park Church of Christ or your favorite charity. My thoughts and prayers to the Chandler Family. My family Freeman/Davis Clan grew up with the Chandlers we first met at Druid Hills Church of Christ and later Vaughn Road church of Christ.

My wife and our girls lived across the street in Carriage Hills from Royce and his lovely family for about 35 years. Our kids grew up during those days and went their ways. Royce loved to fish and he and I shared some great fishing trips to my brother's place in Lowndes County. Royce made potato soup for members of his church that were ill each week. Finally one day I asked him "how sick did a Baptist like me have to be to get on that soup delivery?" We laughed about it and the next week on "soup" day there he was at the door with the best potato soup I have ever had! Royce was a great athlete, father, husband and friend! My love, thoughts and prayers are with all of the family at this difficult time. David, Russ, Cass and Alison remember we love you!
