MAYES, Russell S. - Of Flint, age 60, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Hurley Medical Center, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Funeral service will be held at 3PM Monday, February 11, 2008 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Reverend William G. McMillen officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to Genesee County Humane Society. Visitation 2-8PM Saturday, 1-8PM Sunday and 12PM Monday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Russ was born in Pontiac, Michigan on September 28, 1947. Russ was a Veteran serving 4 years with the Marine Corps. He met Jill Richards in June, 1982 and they were married on April 29, 1990. Russ enjoyed playing scrabble with his wife and best friend, Jill and spending time with his other two "girls" Molly and Gypsy. He enjoyed traveling, scuba diving, hunting, camping and baseball; but mostly loved being with friends and family to chat, with a cup or two of coffee. Russ was employed in Shipping and Receiving at Buick Motor Division, retiring in 1998 and was a member of UAW Local #599. Presently Russ was employed by MTA-Your Ride as a driver. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Jill; loving sisters, Valda Shock and Shirley Prescott; the Richards clan; his children, Michael Mayes of Wisconsin, Michelle Kindt of Grand Blanc, Greg (Sheri) Mayes of Mt. Morris and Joel Mayes of Flint; 9 grandchildren. Russ was preceded in death by his parents, Bill Dye and Edith Mayes; 2 brothers, Bob Bonner and Lloyd Bonner; father-in-law, Jack Richards and nephew, Christopher Wells. I WORKED WITH RUSSELL FOR A SHORT TIME AT YOUR RIDE MT.MORRIS.HE WAS ON THE AFTERNOON SHIFT,THE ONLY THING I KNEW ABOUT HIM UNTIL NOW WAS,HE WAS A VERY CONSCIENCIOUS DRIVER AND LIKED HIS JOB.MY CONDOLOENCES TO THE FAMILY AND EXPECIALLY VALDA AND MIKE SHOCK.MIKE AND I WENT TO SCHOOL TOGETHER AND HE WAS IN MY WEDDING AND I WAS IN HIS AND VALDAS.GOOD BLESS THE FAAMILY.
