Hey Russ. Letting you know that during my interactions with other people I still draw upon things I learned by observing you. I've seen a lot of VPs pass through during my 39 years at The Times. You were the only one with which I was comfortable just talking about anything, work or personal.

I had the privilege of working with Russ at the Orlando Sentinel, CCN, San Antonio Express News, and Bay Area Production Services. Russ was a great leader and believed in giving people opportunities. I remember we use to play basketball together while at the Orlando Sentinel and Russ love to shoot the 3- pointer, we had some funny times together. What a GREAT man!!

Having seen many leaders come and go during my 39 years at the Los Angeles Times, Russ was my favorite. He was the only one I trusted enough to actually speak openly with (so long as I was speaking the truth.) I guess that pretty much sums it up... truth.

I had the privilege of working with Russ at the Orlando Sentinel for years. He was definitely passionate about newspapers - but more so about doing things right and taking care of our customers. Russ went on to bigger and better things - but was always the same "Russ." His bravery in how he dealt with ALS is an inspiration to all who knew him. There was an inspirational quote on his LinkedIn page that read: Never regret a day in your life..... Good days give happiness....bad days give...

To all of Russ' family I want to say, that getting to know him better through his posts after the Cruckson Family Reunion last year, it is a great loss to all that he is no longer with us. However, he has left a legacy through his posts, as well as with his contacts in the last year of his life. I wish I could come to the Memorial Service, but I have been out of town and just got back today. Just can't make another 8 hour trip. Annette, I am so sorry, I know you will miss your brother,...

I worked with Russ for a long time at the Daily Press. I was in the newsroom, and we never had a better ally at the presses, packaging or anywhere else in the building than Russ. Pushing things to the limit to get it in late, and get it right, never had to be explained or negotiated with him. We were on the same page in all respects. He indeed told it straight, and if Russ said it couldn't be done, we knew it was because the forces of physics were the limitations he was citing, not what...
