Thomas Menefee Utz

Thomas Menefee Utz, 89, of Castleton, Virginia, was called home on Sunday morning, May 27, 2012.

He was born on August 31, 1922, in Viewtown, Virginia, to the late Thomas Herbert Utz and Mary Elizabeth Smith Utz. Mr. Utz was a member of Gourdvine Baptist Church. He spent many years as a machinist for the government where he was known to accept the most challenging and difficult projects. Mr. Utz also had a passion for farming and gardening. He loved harvest time where he enjoyed giving away his produce to the community. Whenever he had a free moment, you could find him at his favorite fishing hole casting a line.

Mr. Utz is survived by two sons, Floyd and his wife, Barbara, of Culpeper and Wayne and his wife, Lydia, of Rixeyville; his step-mother, Ressie Utz of West Virginia; three sisters, Evelyn Pullen of Craigsville, Lois Whorton of Centreville and Etta Buchanan of Bristow; two brothers, William "Buck" Utz of Haymarket and Donald Utz of Strasburg. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Melissa Carroll and her husband, Rod, of Madison, Mike Utz of Culpeper, Melanie Phillips and her husband, Stephen of Rixeyville and Thomas Utz of Warner Robins, Georgia; and three great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Emily Carroll and Ryan Phillips. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Marie Gore Utz; three sisters, Frances, Angeline and Ann; and three brothers, Floyd, Harold Ray and Marion "Sonny". The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2012, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, Virginia. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel with the Reverend John S. Farrar officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Rod Carroll, Stephen Phillips, Russell Partlow, Frank Whorton, Billy Singleton and Tommy Woodward. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Gourdvine Baptist Church, 7103 Eggbornsville Road, Rixeyville VA 22737. An online guestbook and tribute wall are available at www.foundandsons.com.
