Russell M. “Russ” Weiss

Kawkawlin, MI

Russell M. Weiss, age 59 was called Home by his Heavenly Father and passed away peacefully at home with family at his side during the early morning hours of Sunday, October 3, 2021. Russ was born in Saginaw, Michigan on June 7, 1962 to the late Elmer and Lorna (Maurer) Weiss and graduated from Frankenmuth High School, class of 1980. He was a truck driver by trade for Causley Trucking, Inc. and frequently conducted Driver’s License and CDL Testing for them. Russ was also a member of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church in Frankenmuth, Michigan. It was there that he married the love of his life, Lori M. (VanDenBoom) on May 20, 2006 and she survives him.

Russ was known for making homemade wine. He took up the hobby of winemaking from his dad after his father’s passing. Russ was innovative and through the help of a friend, he was able to perfect the process and developed numerous flavors over the years. His greatest pleasure was sharing it with others and seeing the pure joy on their faces once they tasted it.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, and golfing. He and Lori frequently camped and fished with family and friends at Lake Margrethe in Grayling, Michigan.

Russ was a fun grandpa to Timothy, Peter, and Natalie because he himself was a “kid at heart”.

Russ’ brief but courageous battle with cancer showed his courage and strong Christian faith in facing life’s challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Russ continued to look to the future with positivity and remained determined, strong, and brave through his last breath. He was humorous, supportive, honorable, and most importantly a loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His was a life well lived and was dearly valued and loved.

Living to carry on his legacy of love and generosity is his wife of 15 years, Lori Weiss; his children, Ryan (Julie) Weiss and Roselynn (Ian) Sharman; grandchildren, Timothy Weiss, Peter Weiss, and Natalie Sharman; siblings, Linda (James) Tinkey, Roger (Joanmarie) Weiss, Gordon (Mary) Weiss, and Ernest (Karla) Weiss. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Besides his parents, Russ was preceded in death by his brother Richard Weiss and sister Lori Weiss.

Funeral Service will take place on Friday, October 8, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church, 1030 W. Tuscola, Frankenmuth, Michigan. The service will be livestreamed at stlorenz.org/stream. Russell’s family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin Frankenmuth, MI 48734 on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the St. Lorenz Student Aid Fund or the Russell Weiss memorial fund c/o Lori Weiss.

Not sure what to say?

My deepest sympathies! I wanted to be there in person, but something important didn't allow that. Russ was a great co-worker and it was my pleasure to know him and work with him. Thank God for the gift of salvation! Glenn Heinlein

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

Lori, We can't begin to tell you how sorry we are for your loss, he was a wonderful man, taken away too soon..

Lori I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Russ. When I worked on the dock at the Sag. P.O. he was so easy to get along with and I know you will miss him deeply. If only there would be more people like Russ, the world would be a much better place.

Russell's Family:
May God's peace be with you as you mourn Russel's departure from this vale of tears to eternal lift in heaven with Jesus. From his birthday I can see that he was born when our children Kathryn '63, Karl '64 were born. While I knew Elmer & Lorna well, I never got to know all their children except Lori who also is with Jesus. May you all continue to confess Jesus as your Lord & Savior
Waldemar Bergdolt, son of George & Emma, & brother of Harold

Russ was a great neighbor. He use to come down and go swimming, we'd go to the casino together, had cookouts and most of a lot of laughs. The golf outings with the kids were also fun. And we remember how extremely happy he was when he met Lori. We sure missed him when he moved but were very happy for him. Many his memories be blessing to his family.
