Ruth Esther McCullerses, devoted Jehovah’s Witness, mother, sister, and friend, died Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at the age of 89. She was born to Leonard and Annie Taylor on May 27, 1933, in Charles City, VA.
She graduated from George P. Phenix High School and was valedictorian of her graduating class. She went to business school where she learned to write in shorthand. Some of her jobs over the years include being a ticket taker at the Carver Theater, as a secretary at Dr. McAllister’s Dental office, insurance & security sales, High’s Ice Cream, Family Dollar, a sales clerk with the F. W. Woolworth company(retired) and she was a very dedicated housekeeper and nanny.
She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on September 18, 1949 at 16 years old. This began her 73-year walk of faith with Jehovah God.
What brought her great joy was telling others about Jehovah; she would leave no stone unturned. Writing poetry and making cards were some of her favorite pastimes. She had a very humble spirit.
Ruth was a loving wife to Pearce McCullerses, who preceded her in death. She leaves to her cherished memory her sister Gladys Doggett. She was a devoted mother to five children: Norvis McCullerses, Norvell McCullerses (Lorita), Beverly Christian, Carlen McCullerses-Bitting, Bryan McCullerses. A cherished grandmother to: Shelita McCullerses, Lanita McCullerses, Sophia Christian-Holliday (Charlie), Ciera Mitchell (Michael), Lauriel Young (Eric, Jr.), Quinton McCullerses, Charvell Bitting, Eschelle Bitting, Mario Brown, Jackie Brown, Steven Brown, Rena Brown; six great grandchildren: Meleea Christian-Sylla, Michael Mitchell, 3rd, Charlie Holliday, Jr., Landon Young, Avery Mitchell, Taylor McCullerses; nieces and nephews: England Doggett, Evan Doggett (Yvette), Carla Doggett, Walter Graham, Anthony Crowell, Ruby Talylor (Kendall), Robin Graham (Deceased), Debra Taylor (Deceased); great nieces and nephews: G’Tearra Gorman, Jolie Doggett, Kirston Scott Holley, Alisha Doggett, Ashley Doggett and a host of great great nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
Ruth will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will continue to inspire and guide us for years to come.
A viewing will be held from 4 PM - 6 PM on Friday, March 3, 2023 at Nickelson-Cummings Funeral Home (4304 Victoria Blvd, Hampton, VA 23669).
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 2 PM at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses (717 E Little Back River Rd Hampton VA 23669-1828). Interment will be held Monday, March 6, 2023 @11 am at Hampton National Cemetery, (Hampton University Campus).
