Ruth Maynard Nuhn
January 4, 1928 – October 20, 2025
Ruth Maynard Nuhn passed away peacefully on October 20, 2025, with her loving family by her side. She was 97 years old.
Born in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, Ruth grew up on the Maynard family farm. Her early years, spent tending to farm duties and caring for younger siblings, instilled in her a powerful work ethic, deep resilience, and unwavering integrity-qualities that remained with her throughout her life.
Ruth dedicated her life to education, touching the lives of countless young people with her guidance, care, and commitment. She began her teaching career as an elementary school teacher and later served as a reading interventionist in the Old Saybrook school system. She went on to serve as the Reading Curriculum Coordinator and Administrator in the Clinton school system.
She held a B.A. in Sociology and Art from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia, a Master's in Education from Southern Connecticut State University, a Sixth Year degree in Reading Consultation, and a certificate in Intermediate Administration and Supervision.
Ruth was a proud and active member of several professional organizations, including Alpha Delta Kappa, the American Association of University Women, the International Reading Association, and the Connecticut Association of Reading Research.
A gifted artist, Ruth expressed herself beautifully through charcoal, pencil, and watercolor. In retirement, she returned to her artistic roots with renewed passion, further honing her craft at the Guilford Handcraft Center and through participation in the Madison and Clinton Art Societies. Her watercolors were featured in both juried and non-juried exhibitions across Shoreline galleries.
Ruth also devoted time to her community. She volunteered at the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center, contributed her talents to set design for Light Opera on the Sound, and participated in local reading groups. She enjoyed cross-country skiing, tennis, and traveling with close friends.
Above all, Ruth's heart was with her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her greatest joy and the center of her world. Ruth was preceded in death by her mother, Theresa Fladrich Maynard, father, George A. Maynard, and her siblings, George B. Maynard, Edward Maynard, Ledyard Maynard, Delance Bushnell and John Maynard. She is survived by her beloved sister, Myra M. Day, son Peter Nuhn, daughter, Catherine Keating, son, James Nuhn and wife, Diana, son, John Nuhn and wife, Gillian Andrews. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren: David Keating and his wife, Colleen, and their children, Shannon, Alannah, and Evan; Theresa Keating and husband, Tim Chang, and their children, Viola and Lowen, Bradley Nuhn, Westley Nuhn and his wife, Anna, and their children, Maxwell and Adeline.
Ruth's life was a testament to compassion, creativity, and dedication. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
