Ruth Dian Pumphrey

I was saddened to read of Ruth's passing in the latest University of Washington Magazine. I met Ruth when she was editor of the Daily and I was an aspiring reporter. "Energetic" doesn't begin to describe her, and I'm not surprised to learn of her trailblazing career in journalism. Condolences to her family and many friends.

I went to school with Ruth at Monticello Jr High in Longview, Washington. We were best friends through junior high until we got separated when they opened a new high school (Mark Morris).

Ruth and I wrote songs together (and got out of math tests in Squeek Holbrook's 7th grade math class). I still remember three of the songs we wrote.

Ruth's mother and my mother were in Eastern Star together and were friends, too. I remember riding the school bus home to Ruth's home on Ocean...
