Ruth Schmidt

I was one of Dr Schmidt's students in late 1970 and she wook us on fine field trips to the face of Eklutna Glacier and up by Jade Creek cracking slate and finding fossils...never forget setting up the wave machine for her and also bringing Petoskey Stones for her collection at UAA...Fine lady..never ever forget..George Wilson 1971 BBA

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Schmidt in her capacity as UAA faculty emeritus. Dr. Schmidt was a woman well ahead of her times-a trail blazer in many respects. Now, after she's passed I learn that she was also a philanthropic trail blazer! She generously supported The Salvation Army, Catholic Social Services, Providence Foundation and more with gifts from her estate. WOW!

Ruth's vitality and entry into the field of Geology so early for a woman was inspiring. Her giving nature to those of us just starting was generous and appreciated. Big shoes to fill...Ruth will be missed.

Consistent with her wishes, it will be a true celebration with photos, food and beer/wine. And be prepared for some surprising stories!

Ruth's dry sense of humor and wonderful smile lightened up all around her. Her love of nature and her desire to keep it intact for all to enjoy, now and in the future, is a beacon for us to follow. She was a very special person. Thank you, Ruth.

Ruth, an inspiring, strong woman in our circle of friends growing up in Anchorage, she was warm and generous, full of stories and wit. I suspect she had an influence on my passion for rocks as well. She will be missed by all who have known her over the years.

Thanks, Ruth, for your friendship with my mom and our family over the years. I thank you for welcoming us back to the Anchorage community when we returned. You will be missed.

Ruth was a phenomenal woman. Her passion for geology was addictive when she was around. Loved and missed much.
