E.S. Eley & Sons Funeral Chapel, Inc. Obituary

Sallie Ann (Tooke) Dixson, 85, of Kansas City, MO, died at Research Medical Center on February 29, 2024.

Sallie was born in Castor, Louisiana to Joe Tooke, Sr. and Lillie (Lewis) Tooke on November 19, 1938. She often referred to herself as a country girl. She grew up with her brother climbing trees, fishing, and such.

She attended and graduated from Ringgold Colored High School in Louisiana in 1955, before moving to Kansas City and studying Nursing at UMKC.

Sallie graduated from UMKC in 1959, and began a long, compassionate career as a nurse. She worked in several different settings including Queen of the World Hospital in Kansas City, MO; Elmendorf AFB Hospital in Anchorage, AK; Scott AFB Hospital in Belleville, IL; and a lengthy tenure at Research Hospital in Kansas City, MO. Following her retirement from Research, Sallie became a school nurse where she was able to care for children and even be a grandma figure for some of them. She served at schools in both the Kansas City, Missouri School District and Center School District.

Sallie met Henry Dixson in Kansas City, when he was stationed at Richards Gebaur AFB. Henry fondly recounts the story of picking Sallie out of a group of girls, telling his buddies, “You can talk to any of those other girls, but the one in the middle is mine!” Sallie and Henry were married on November 20, 1960. Three children were born to this union.

Sallie was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church, of Kansas City, MO, whenever she was able. Some ministries she participated in over the years include Deaconess, Nursery, Sunday School, Baptist Training Union, and Choir. She also worked with Friendship Summer Camp with Sis. Beverly Robinson for a number of years. She especially enjoyed working with children.

Sallie will be affectionately remembered for being kind, loving, giving, and having a warm smile and a delightful laugh. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.

Sallie was preceded in death by her father, Joe Tooke, Sr.; brother, Joe Tooke, Jr.; and “sister-friend”, Lula Stevenson.

Sallie is survived by her husband, Henry Dixson; children, Cynthia Dixson, Michael Dixson, and Karen (James) Perkins, all of Kansas City, MO; mother, Lillie Tooke, Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Collin Dixson, St. Paul, MN, Justin Dixson, Kansas City, MO, Audrey Perkins, Kansas City, MO, LaRonne Perkins, Jonesboro, AR, Shawn Walker, Kansas City, MO; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Rose Panzner, Raymore, MO, Wesley Michael-Stanley Dixson, St. Paul, MN; Izabell Daisy Dixson and Hazelyn Lillie Dixson, St. Paul, MN; beloved nieces, nephews and countless friends and relatives.
