Mrs. Sally Brittain Leger, 91, of Rutherford College, passed away on Thursday October 14, 2021 at College Pines Nursing Center, after a period of declining health. Mrs. Leger was born February 8, 1930 in Burke County a daughter of the late John Sidney Brittain, Sr. and Fathey Carswell Brittain. She was employed at Valdese Weavers and Alba-Waldensian and retired from the Burke County Schools as a cafeteria worker at Rutherford College Elementary School. She loved working at her neighborhood school and in her own words, "It was the best job I ever had." "Buck" and Sallie enjoyed their farm life in Rutherford College were there was always a big garden and the produce was never wasted. Hundreds of jars of canned goods and freezers provided food for many meals prepared by Sallie. A talented cook, she never let anyone go away hungry from her kitchen. She is remembered for her chicken and dumplings, candid yams and homemade cakes and pies. Her happiest moments were those with her family and friends around her dinner table. Sallie was a woman of strong faith. She was a longtime active member of Icard's Grove Baptist Church until her health prohibited her from attending. She was especially close to the members of the Senior Ladies Sunday School class and kept in touch with them often. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Buddy "Buck" R. Leger, Sr.. Mrs. Leger was the last surviving child of Sidney and Fathey Brittain, and was preceded in death by her siblings, John S. Brittain, Jr. (Juanita), Pete Brittain, Voltie Johnson (Forrest) and Sherrill Britain (Betty) and brother in law Freddy Leger. Surviving include her children, Pat Stillwell and husband Richard, John A. Leger, Sr. and wife Kim and Buddy R. Leger Jr. all of Rutherford College. Also surviving are the loves of her life, he grandchildren, Brian Stillwell, John A. "Zeke" Leger, Jr. and wife Brittany, Amy L. Williams and husband Brent, Felix Leger, Alex Leger, Buddy R. Leger III and wife Haley, Ben Leger and wife Haley and Laura L. Braswell and husband Sam; great-grandchildren, Kylee Wright, Ellah Leger, Amelia Leger, Wyatt Leger, Lealon Leger, Cecil Leger, Charlotte Leger and Waylon Braswell. In addition are her brother in law, Gerald Leger, sister in laws, Frances L. Barlowe, Rita L. Brittain and Blenda Leger. Caring for her family was a very important part of Sallie's life. She was always there for them. The family would like to thank Dr. John H. Sherrill for the many years of excellent medical care as well as the entire staff of College Pines Health and Rehabilitation for their excellent and compassionate care since July 2021, especially the staff on Hall 400. A lie in state and viewing will be Sunday October 17, 2021 from 12 until 3:00 P.M. at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese. A private Funeral Service will be held at Icard's Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Eldon Hinegardner officiating. interment will follow in the Icard's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Icard's Grove Baptist Church, 3097 Icard's Grove Ave. Connelly Springs, NC 28612.

Pat, I am so sorry to hear of your mom's death. Although I have not seen her in recent years, I have many fond memories of her. May God comfort you and all the family. And may He give you strength for all the difficult days ahead. Love you. ♥
