Not sure what to say?

Sam and I started in the backfield of the County All Atars Team 1969. La Playa Stadium was packed. At 6’3” 210 and 6’1” 195 he and I were possibly the most feared teenage running duo in America for one night. I could cover the first 10 yards in 1.6 seconds. He could run the hundred in 9.9 and shot-put me to the moon if he wanted. Hercules and Mercury he was. One of the nicest most kind-spoken guys I ever met. And a smile as big as the Golden Gate. We’ll miss you, Sam.

It is with heartfelt sympathy that I express my condolences to Sam's family.
What a guy, what an athlete, what a friend! Sam had tremendous character, a quiet strength and an admirable humility. I'm privileged to have been able to call him my friend and football colleague. My wife joins me in sentiment and sincere sympathy.

Sam "Bam" was class personified. He was our hometown hero growing up in Santa Barbara Ca. I had the privilege of meeting him, and becoming dear friends. We blessed me with his stories growing up in Santa Barbara, and his exploits at USC, and time in the NFL. I took his death much harder than I realized I would. He will truly be missed.

Thank for his strength and roll model to me as Blackman a real hero.

Precious memories of Sam. Especially when he ran all over my H. S. Football Team. Port Hueneme Vikings in 1969. Not only a great football player but a great sprinter. Well loved, admired and respected. Keeping the Cunningham family in my thoughts and prayers ❤
