TOWNSVILLE, Australia (AP) - The North Queensland Cowboys say Sam Faust, who played 24 matches for the National Rugby League team in 2007-08, has died of leukemia.

The Cowboys said Faust, a 26-year-old father of three, died early Monday after a two-year fight with acute myeloid leukemia that was diagnosed in 2009.

Born in Proserpine in north Queensland state, Faust made his first-grade debut in the 10th round of 2007 and played in five straight victories to end the regular season before featuring in the Cowboys three playoff appearances that year.

North Queensland chief executive Peter Jourdain said it was a sad day for the Cowboys and the rugby league community, adding "Sam was a talented young footballer and a fine young man."
