Not sure what to say?

Dearest Dr Sammy ! The world just has much less music without you - Thank you for helping this goofy, struggling, homesick gal during my four years at IWU (the pictures included take me back) - Your kindness, encouragement, firmness, & loving care helped me grow up & become someone who knew the success had to cone with hard work ! Fly high and may you & Maxie find one another again -

Sera Leigh and Ron, My sincerest condolences for the loss of Sam. Bless his reunion with Maxine. I may have told you this story before, but I will absolutely never forget something he told me when taking vocal pedagogy, and it´s been my life teaching motto! He said he had a student come in and it´s blatantly obvious that he never practiced this week, instead of scolding him, and belittling him, he told me to say this to the student, "That note you sang right there, that was perfect! Now...

Sam was an absolute joy to know. He was kind, thoughtful and a true gentleman. Sam (and Maxie) were dear friends to my parents and treated all of us like family. My sympathy goes out to Leigh, Ron, and their family...All of you will always hold a special place in my heart. Mindy

I have happy memories of sharing some time with Sammy at Illinois Wesleyan. There were a group of us who ate lunch together from time to time at the Student Center (Jerry Bidle, Sammy, and a couple of us from the Development Office). Sammy also led our ad hoc chorus that made an appearance at the employee holiday luncheon. We just had fun being together and singing. I always picture him smiling . . . my sincere condolences to the family.

It was a privilege to work with Sam for many years in the School of Music at IWU. He was a great teacher and a wonderful colleague. But, most of all, he was an amazing human being. We will always remember his integrity, wisdom, and caring spirit. With sincere condolences, Scott and Eva Ferguson
