Samuel A. Ellis, 91, of Dunbar (formerly a long time resident of Clarksburg) passed away Friday, March 25, 2005 at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston following a brief illness. He was born October 12, 1913 in Willard, WV the son of the late Anthony Allessio and Marie Theresa Guida Allesio. Mr. Ellis was preceded in death by his wife Lucille Rago Ellis on January 17, 2001. He is survived by three sons; Richard L. Ellis of Atlanta, Ga., David J. Ellis and wife Sharon of Charleston, WV and Sam J. Ellis of New York, NY; six grandchildren; Marc Ellis, Scott Ellis, Kimberly Ann Ellis, Diane Denise Dennick, Samuel David Ellis, Rose Mary Thomas; five great grandchildren; Lilly Ellis, Anthony Whitlock, Amanda Whitlock, Adam Whitlock, and David Lee Ellis. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by four brothers; Frank Ellis, John Ellis, Louie Ellis and Joe Ellis and one sister; Flora Scalise. Mr. Ellis was a businessman having partnered with his brothers in the Ellis Restaurant and Drive in from 1950-1986. He was a school teacher and band director at RW High School where he was also later instrumental in organizing and directing the RW Alumni Band. He was a member of the Elks Club and the Knights of Columbus, a longtime volunteer of United Hospital Center Auxillary, and also a former board member at United Hospital Center. He was a former member of the House of Delegates in the Democratic Party of Harrison County and former Democratic Chairman and Treasurer. Mr. Ellis was an active alumni of Salem College affairs and in the 1930’s and 40’s he was an active leader of the “Sammy Ellis Orchestra”. Family and friends will be received at the Davis Funeral Home, One Olen Thomas Dr./Rt. 98, Clarksburg on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Father Cesidio Federico as celebrant.
