Doc was a great football player; both at Hokes Bluff and at Auburn University, where he was a fullback on offense and a linebacker on defense.. I remember Coach Jordan complimenting him in the Birmingham News for being in such good physical condition when practice began his junior year, when the Auburn football team played in the Orange Bowl.

Doc had a terrific sense of humor and was a likeable person. He and Bobbi began dating back in high school and were partners from then...
