Samuel Jaskilka Obituary
General Jaskilka served for 36 years in the USMC (1942 – 1978), and fought in three wars – World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He became Assistant Commandant in 1976. He holds the following personal decorations: The Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star Medal with one gold star in lieu of a second award, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V," the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the National Order of Vietnam, and the Army Distinguished Service Order, 1st Class.
General and Mrs. Jaskilka raised four children, Michael of Eugene, Oregon; Diane of Arlington, Virginia; Anne (deceased 2008); and Mark of Colorado Springs, Colorado. They have 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
General Jaskilka loved his family, his country, and the Marine Corps. Everything he did he did with great passion, whether it was leading troops in combat, clearing land to build his house, or cheering for his favorite teams. His passing leaves a void in all our hearts that cannot be replaced. He will be greatly missed.

General Jaskilka (I could never bring myself to call him Sam was the embiment of what a Marine, husband, father, grandfather and friend could be. He was a great American and I am proud to have known him.

I met General Jaskilka while recovering from surgery at Quantico. He visited because I was from his hone town. He was an amazing gentleman and officer. Thank you, sir, for your friendship and your service. It was an honor to know you.

When I arrived in Vietnam in Feb 69, Gen Sam was the Asst 1st Mar Div Commander. The 69 tet offensive had broken out over night and we were flown in from Okinawa as replacements for combat losses. Despite the active fight going on, he took time to greet and speak with each rookie officer joining the Division, to calm our nerves and give us sense that we could do his. In 29+ years of active duty as an infantry officer, I never forgot this moment, and tried to live up to it when I was the grey beard.
He was a very special Marine and help each generation of Marine live up to expectations.

I am sorry to hear about the "falling asleep" of God's servant Gen. Samuel Jaskilka. He was baptized in Saint Peter & Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in February, 1920. Our community is most proud of this son who served his country with such valor and honor. Please pass on our parish's sincere condolences to his relatives.

We know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We may have not seen Uncle Sam for a number of years but we spoke of him fondly and we will always remember his love of the Marine Corp and his country. In deepest sympathy on your loss.

No one could have asked for a better grandfather. He was my friend and my mentor. I admired his modesty, his humor, his love for his family, his love of his country, and his love of the Marine Corp.
