Not sure what to say?

It is with great sadness that I learned of Sam's passing from this world to another. Although, I haven't been in touch with him for quite a while, his memory will always be with me. We had a great time together running the Loomis Coin Auctions and participating in various endeavors. It was he who introduced me to Wrightsville Beach and the Carolina coast. My heartfelt sympathy to Kathy, Steven, and Benjamin. Life goes on, and a piece of him will always be with me.

I am very sorry to hear the news about Sam Pierson. He was a huge presence on the Loomis campus on so many levels -- as a teacher, coach, and mentor. I can vouch for him teaching Catch-22, Gulliver's Travels, and Shakespeare all in the same course. He pushed his students to think critically, all the while keeping things lively with his wicked sense of humor. He was a caring and effective mentor and a great lacrosse coach.

I know I speak for many of my contemporaries in saying that...

Sam Pierson was one of those teachers who was seminal to my Loomis experience. I had the good fortune of having him for my Junior English teacher. I was also a wrestling captain. So we connected on many levels. I can remember him giving me pointers from the audience in one of my state tournaments. He was the first teacher to read my creative writing and encourage me to do more of it. He took time outside of class (during his summer vacation) to read and critique a short story of mine. I now...

I only had Mr. Pierson for one trimester, but he had a huge impact on me. I know he had a tremendous impact on my close Loomis friend Peter Buchman. As with some of the other magicians ... um ... English teachers around there who helped turn me literate, the phrase "English teacher" does not suffice.... Mr. Pierson also used to play it pretty close to the vest with his jaialai tips - fond memories of running into him over at the fronton.... Much appreciation for his positive influence on my...

Sam was generous with suggestions, guidance, and the sharing of teaching materials for new arrivals like me, in 1975. He was a strong dorm head, giving of his time and demonstrative in his concern for the wellbeing of students in his care.
My memories of Sam are vivid.

I graduated from Loomis Chaffee in 1977 and have many fond memories of Sam Pierson as a teacher and friend. He embodied the diversity of interest that LCS was trying to instill in all its students. His role as faculty advisor to the Coin Club and his infectious joy in the song "Convoy" in 1975 were just two of the other sides to the Shakespeare- and Gatsby-quoting teacher.
