Samuel Bowen was a restaurant cook known to friends as "Smokey." He was also known as a fun-loving person who stayed in touch with his family. "He always had a smile on his face," said his sister, Consuella Bowen. "You could never tell when he was having a down day." Bowen, 38, of Cleveland, was killed July 7 in an explosion near his vehicle in Samarra. He was a member of the Ohio National Guard. Bowen was credited with pulling a wounded soldier from the line of fire in June, even though he was also wounded. "Without regard for himself, without regard for what injuries he had, Sam grabbed me and pulled me to safety," said Spc. Ronald Eaton, another Ohio National Guardsman. Survivors include his wife, Melanie, three children and two stepchildren.

Not sure what to say?

While in Iraq, I had the honor of becoming friends with Sam. Today and on all days I hope that everyone remembers the person that he was and the sacrifice that he made for all of us. I miss you my friend

To the family and friends of Pfc. Samuel R. Bowen:
It has truly been my honor to sign Samuel's guest book these past few years. Unfortunately, due to complications from my Multiple Sclerosis, this may be the last message I'm able to write. Please forgive me and know that Samuel will always be remembered in my home.
With love and respect ~ Peggy

To the family and friends of Pfc. Samuel R. Bowen:
Please accept my remembrance of Samuel on the anniversary of his passing and know that he will never be forgotten.

Smokey,my heart aches everyday! The same way it did when I received that dreadful call on July 7, 2004. You were much more than my first cousing, you were my big brother and friend. Thank you so much for being the soldier that you were. Willing to risk your life for the freedom of all Americans. Aunt Elsie raised a humble man. The Bible tells me that weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning! I experienced my joy a long time ago but it still doesn't replace the void that...

My name is Terry Bowen. PFC Samuel R. Bowen was killed on my birthday....July 7th. The only Bowen killed in that war so far...and it was on my birthday.

I just want to thank the family for his service.
