Not sure what to say?

Dear Ruth and Rich Family: I have just returned to Salt Lake City and the news that Sam passed last week to new teaching and advisory missions beyond this world. As one of many whose lives were changed by his remarkable mentoring and personal interest in his student "charges" (both inside and outside the classroom), I want to go on record that Sam was an iconic figure and force in my life. My very profession was heavily influenced from that first riveting class in International Politics...

Ruth (Speed) & Laurie,

So sad that Sam and Mom both left us on the same day -maybe they planned it that way! I remember what an interesting, funny and caring person he was and how he and my Dad used to have such great conversations together. I am broken-hearted over the loss of my Mom and I'm sure you are going through the same pain. Take care, and hopefully things will get better with time. Laurie, let's get together to go skiing (or lunch?)sometime - Love, Lotti Wann

Dear Mrs. Rich and Family,
As the Chair of the History Department at the University of Utah, I want to express for all of my colleagues our deepest condolences. Sam was a good friend of the Department, and he will be greatly missed by everyone.

Dear Speed -
My condolences. I have fantastic memories of travelling with you and Sam to South America. It was a pleasure and he was a very special person. He will be missed.

Dear Mrs. Rich and Family:
It is with great sadness that I learn of Sam's passing. I am what must be thousands of students who were inspired by his teachings. What a guy. His letter of recommendation led to my being accepted at Columbia University School of Journalism and subsequently to TWO Scholarships thanks to him. We all will miss him. May there be some solace that we all share your sorrow. Tom Korologos (U. of U. class of l955).

Dear Speed: It was a great pleasure to get to know Sam better during the past 2 or 3 years at the "DOD" on Fridays. I knew him well during the early years when he and my brother Dick were so close to each other on their missions and in the fraternity. I studied international relations under him in college. Our parents were also very close. His mother was in the State Legislature with my dad. And one of my early East High School Football exercises was tramping wool in the large gunnny...

Dear Speed and Laurie-
My mom also passed away on Christmas Day in the evening at Caresource. It was nice reconnecting with you over there, even if it wasn't in the best of circumstances. I have very fond memories of our early days in Salt Lake City either attending parties at your house or your coming over to my parents' house. Sam was a great guy, and I know my dad always enjoyed talking with him. I know you will miss him, he was a wonderful, bright and talented individual. All my...
