Samuel (Sam) Mark Selay, 34, of Menifee, CA died unexpectedly on October 20, 2018 while Kayaking in Lake Elsinore, CA.

Sam was born in Flagstaff AZ on July 8, 1984, and moved with his family to Imperial CA, in 1985. He attended Imperial High school, where he was on the wrestling team and involved with weight lifting and other sports.

Inspired to defend his country after the 9/11 attacks, Sam enlisted in the Marine Corps while still a senior in High School. He began serving after graduating in 2003. As a Marine, he worked in the field of supply chain and logistics at Camp Pendleton and became a Continuous Improvement Manager/Lean Six Sigma (LSS). He was very passionate about this method of improving and streamlining organizations and continued pursuing this as a career after he retired from the Marines in 2016.

During his service he completed a Bachelor's and Masters degree in Business Administration. He also was a contributing author in an anthology ("Practicing Lean," by Mark Graban) which dealt with this subject, and volunteered as a mentor with Veterati, an organization that aids veterans seeking careers.

Sam was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his wife and children. Besides his wife, Brittney, he is survived by his children, Journey, Serenity, Jordan and Nolan, his parents, Mark and Marianne Selay and his two brothers, Matthew and Ben Selay. His mother-in-law Marsha Helko, his father-in-law Jimmie Haines.

His sister-in-law Brenda Selay, Cynthia Nolan, and Susanne Boggs. His nieces, Samantha Nolan, Gabriel Shore, Madison Shore, and Ruby Selay. Sam was preceded in death by his friends and fellow Marines Marcus Cherry and Matthew Barger as well as Sam's grandparents. He was preceded in death by his beloved dog of 12 years Sparkles.

Please take time to write a memory you have of Sam below so we can pass on these stories to his children.

We will be having two opportunities to remember a life well lived.

Not sure what to say?

Thoughts and prayers for you all we love you all.so much❤

I am so sorry for your lost, my heart breaks for all of you.

I remember Sam as a very hard-working young man. He would come to mow my lawn. To get here he would drag his lawn more, with the Weedwhacker on top, behind his bicycle across the highway and down the road to my house. After he finished mowing the lawn he would return home again on his bicycle. He was always so faithful and reliable to help me out.
My most sincere condolences to Mark and Marianne and his wife Brittany. Memories and prayers will get you through this time. Sandra...

May the love of friends and family and above all, God's, comfort the Selays

One day, I got a LinkedIn note from someone named William Harvey. William was asking if he could talk with me about my views on Lean maturity assessments...for a dissertation he was planning to write. When I chatted with William, I found out that Sam was the one who suggested William reach out to me...and I believe Sam was on the first call too! After a rousing discussion, two things happened: 1. William changed his dissertation topic... 2. Sam, William and I became friends! Chatting ok...
