January 21, 1943 - November 19, 2022
Columbia, South Carolina - A graveside service for Dr. Sander Martin Fields, 79, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2022, in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Dr. Fields died Saturday, November 19, 2022. Born January 21, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, he was a son of the late Albert Fields and Lillian Drake, and the husband of Suzanne C. Fields. Sander grew up in suburban Detroit, raised by his mother, his uncle Daniel, and both sets of grandparents. His father was a U.S. infantryman, killed in action in December of 1944 fighting in Germany. His mother was remarried to Walter Drake when Sander was twelve years old. Sander graduated from Cass Technical High School and went on to complete pharmacy school at Wayne State University. He met his wife Suzanne "Suzi" while working as a lifeguard at a Michigan summer camp. He began his profession as a pharmacist in Detroit, eventually opening his own "Thrifty Drugs" store in Pontiac, Michigan. In 1978, Sander relocated his family to Spartanburg, S.C. where he began studies at Sherman College of Chiropractic and worked as a pharmacist at a local hospital. After graduating from Sherman College, he practiced in Spartanburg for a short time before moving his family to Columbia, S.C. in 1985 where he opened Fields Chiropractic Clinic in East Columbia. Sander loved helping people and was a dedicated practitioner. He enjoyed the professional relationships and friendships that he developed throughout his many years of practice. He eventually retired in 2012 from full-time practice and sons Andrew and James Fields continued in his footsteps.
Sander was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He had a lifelong love of swimming, music, art and photography. Sander was an avid reader. He loved automobiles, naturally, having spent his teenage years cruising Woodward Avenue in Detroit in the 50's and 60's. He and Suzi enjoyed going to local shag festivals, dancing to Rock-and-Roll music of their era. "Sandy" will be dearly missed.
Surviving are sons, Andrew/wife Becky, and James/wife Danna; grandchildren, Player, Andrew, Mary, Parker and Allie Fields.

Dear Suzi - I am so sad to see this notice of Sandy's passing. Although knowing him for only a short time, I loved visiting the two of you. I send my love and heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Love, Maria
